GATE 2027 exam pattern explains how the examination is organised, the types of questions asked, the marking scheme, and the distribution of marks across different sections. Understanding the exam pattern before starting your preparation makes it easier to plan your study schedule and approach the examination with the right strategy.

GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer-Based Test (CBT) for 30 test papers, with each paper carrying 100 marks and a duration of 3 hours. Most papers consist of 65 questions and include a 15-mark General Aptitude (GA) section. Depending on the selected paper, the remaining marks are distributed between Engineering Mathematics (where applicable) and subject-specific questions as prescribed in the official syllabus.

The examination includes Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Negative marking applies only to incorrect answers in MCQs, while MSQs and NAT questions do not carry any negative marking. In addition to testing subject knowledge, the question paper also evaluates analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and conceptual understanding.

Some GATE 2027 papers follow a different paper structure. For example, AR, GE, GG, RA, XE, XH, and XL contain common and optional sections based on the pattern prescribed for each paper. Candidates planning to appear for two papers must select the second paper only from the combinations approved by IIT Madras.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ans: GATE Exam Pattern 2027 sets a fixed duration of 3 hours for each paper. Each paper consists of a total of 65 questions that are categorized into General Aptitude (15 marks), Engineering Mathematics (where applicable), and subject-specific questions. The paper includes a mix of MCQs, MSQs, and NATs to assess various skills like recall, comprehension, application, and analysis.

Ans: Yes, GATE Exam Pattern 2027 gives candidates the option to choose one or two papers. The primary paper should align with their academic background, and the secondary paper can be selected from a list of allowed combinations. The secondary paper must be selected only from the combinations approved by IIT Madras.

Ans: According to GATE Exam Pattern 2027, most papers follow a standard mark distribution: 15 marks for General Aptitude, 13 marks for Engineering Mathematics (where applicable), and 72 marks for subject-specific sections. However, papers like AR, XL, and XH have unique sectional combinations with different weightage and optional sections based on the subject chosen.

Ans: GATE Exam Pattern 2027 includes negative marking only for MCQs. If you answer a 1-mark MCQ incorrectly, 1/3 mark is deducted. For 2-mark MCQs, 2/3 mark is subtracted. MSQs and NATs have no negative marking, allowing candidates to attempt them without the risk of losing marks, and there is no partial marking for MSQ questions..

Ans: There are three main types of questions in the GATE exam:

  • MCQ (Multiple Choice Question): Each question has four options, but only one option is correct. These questions carry negative marking if answered incorrectly.
  • MSQ (Multiple Select Question): These questions can have more than one correct answer, and you have to select all the correct options. There is no partial marking for MSQ questions.
  • NAT (Numerical Answer Type): Here, you have to enter a numerical value using the on-screen keypad. There are no options and no negative marking.

Each type tests different skills, ranging from clarity of concepts and problem-solving to accuracy and analytical thinking.
