Frequently Asked Questions
Ans: No, one cannot apply for GATE exam directly after completing Diploma in Civil Engineering. GATE eligibility requires at least a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology or equivalent qualification. After completing Diploma, you need to get admission in a graduate engineering program like B.Tech or B.E. in Civil Engineering through lateral entry or regular admission. Once you successfully complete your degree, you will be eligible to appear for GATE exam. A good GATE score will help you get admission in top M.Tech programs or secure a job in PSUs.
Ans: Yes, candidates with backlog in their qualifying degree can still apply for the GATE exam, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria of GATE. While filling the GATE application form, such candidates will have to upload a copy of their final year marksheet issued by their institute. It is important to note that only the marksheet issued by the institute will be accepted - internet-downloaded marksheets will not be considered valid. However, the qualifying degree must be successfully completed without any pending backlog for final admission to M.Tech programmes or PSU recruitment.
Ans: GATE score is valid for three years from the date of declaration of results. This means that candidates can apply for M.Tech, M.E., or Ph.D. programs during this period using their valid GATE score, as well as for recruitment in PSUs that accept GATE score. After the three-year period, the score will no longer be considered for admission or job applications and candidates will have to appear for the GATE exam again if they wish to apply again.
Ans: Yes, degree students in Arts, Humanities and Commerce will now be able to appear for GATE, but for certain subjects that were introduced in recent years. The most relevant option is the Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) paper, which covers subjects like Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. To be eligible, candidates must either be in the third year of their undergraduate program in these fields or have completed their degree by 2027.
