Ans: The exam is computer-based with a duration of 120 minutes divided into three sections: VARC (40 min), DILR (40 min), and QA (40 min). Each correct answer awards +3 marks, and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark (MCQs only). The number of questions is expected to be around 66, similar to recent years.
Ans: CAT score and percentile are determined through a multi-step process that accounts for raw scores, normalises for variations in exam slots, and ranks candidates relative to all other test takers.
The process of determining the CAT score
1. Raw Score Calculation:
Raw scores are calculated based on correct and incorrect answers. For correct answers, +3 marks are awarded. Incorrect Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) result in a deduction of -1 mark, while there is no penalty for incorrect or unattempted Type-in-the-Answer (TITA) questions. The total raw score is the sum of raw scores from the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA) sections.
2. Scaled Score Calculation (Normalisation):
To ensure fairness across different exam sessions, raw scores are normalised. This statistical process accounts for variations in difficulty levels and score distributions between slots. Raw scores are adjusted based on the relative difficulty of a candidate's session, resulting in a scaled score for each section and the overall exam. These scaled scores are used to determine percentile ranks.
The process of determining the CAT percentile:
Your percentile reflects your rank compared to all other test takers.
The percentile is calculated using the formula:
P = [(N – r) / N] x 100
where P is the percentile, N is the total number of candidates, and r is the candidate's rank based on their scaled score.
For example, if 250,000 candidates took the exam and your rank is 2,500, your percentile would be 99.00, meaning you performed better than 99% of test takers.
It is important to note that percentile scores are calculated for individual sections and the overall exam. Candidates with identical scaled scores share the same rank, and tie-breaking rules are applied for percentile calculation. The CAT percentile is a relative measure influenced by other candidates' performance and slot difficulty.
Ans: If you’re targeting IIMs (95–99+ percentile), it’s best to start preparation around Aug–Oct of the previous year of the CAT exam. It will give your 12–14 months of time for concept building, practice, and extensive mock tests. For top non-IIMs (85–95 percentile), starting around January–March with focused study and regular mocks can be enough. Early starters can progress from fundamentals to mock-based refinement, while late starters should adopt a mock-first approach to quickly identify and work on weak areas. Consistent practice and timed tests are crucial in both cases.
Ans: There is no limit on the number of attempts for the CAT exam. You can take the exam as many times as you want if you meet the eligibility criteria. Some candidates also take the exam to improve their scores, while others may appear only once.
Ans: It would be ideal if you could attempt 25-30 full-length mocks along with sectional tests before the actual CAT exam 2026. Start with fewer mocks and increase the frequency as the exam approaches. The key is not just taking mocks but also analysing them to correct mistakes and improve strategy.
Ans: After CAT 2026 result is out, IIMs and other participating institutes release shortlists for the WAT, GD, and PI rounds based on CAT scores and academic profile. Each institute has its own selection criteria, often giving weightage to work experience and past academics. Final offers are made after these rounds, combining CAT score with performance in the interview process.
Ans: For top IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, you generally need a 99+ percentile. Mid-tier IIMs often require 95–97 percentile, while newer IIMs may shortlist candidates with 90–94 percentile. Non-IIMs have varied cutoffs, ranging from 80–95 percentile depending on the institute.
