CBSE has announced that Class 10 students will have the opportunity to take board exams twice a year from the 2026 academic session. While the first examination will remain compulsory, the second attempt will be optional, allowing students to improve their scores. Students' final scores will reflect their highest marks achieved across both examination attempts.

According to an official CBSE statement, this initiative is designed to create a more flexible and student-friendly assessment system while mitigating the stress associated with high-stakes annual exams. By introducing multiple examination opportunities, the Board aims to foster a supportive learning environment that prioritizes growth and reduces undue pressure on students. This progressive step aligns with broader educational reforms to enhance academic adaptability and holistic development.

CBSE Implements NEP 2020 Reforms: Introduces Flexible Twice-a-Year Board Exams for Class 10 Board Exams 2026

In line with the NET 2020 vision for stress-free learning, the CBSE has introduced a significant academic reform allowing Class 10 students two annual board exam attempts starting from the 2026 batch. This progressive shift from the conventional single-examination system empowers learners to enhance their performance without the overwhelming pressure of a one-time, high-stakes assessment.

By implementing biannual examinations, the CBSE fosters a culture of continuous improvement, where students can utilize their second attempt to strengthen subject mastery. This student-centric approach not only reduces examination anxiety but also aligns with global best practices in educational assessment. The initiative reflects CBSE's commitment to implementing NEP 2020's core principles of flexibility and holistic development in India's academic landscape.

Educators and policymakers anticipate this reform will significantly improve learning outcomes while maintaining rigorous academic standards.

Scheme of Two CBSE Board Examinations

CBSE has introduced a dual-examination system for Class 10, effective from the 2026 academic session, to align with NEP 2020's vision of reducing academic stress. Under this scheme, students will appear for the initial mandatory board exam in mid-February, followed by an optional second exam in May to enhance scores in core subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages.

However, students failing in three or more subjects in the first attempt will not qualify for the second exam and will be categorized under "Essential Repeat," requiring them to reappear the following year. Eligibility for the second exam is limited to improvement candidates, compartment cases, and those replacing a subject.

Special provisions have been made for athletes, students from winter-bound schools, and Children with Special Needs, allowing them to choose either exam based on convenience. Additionally, internal assessments will remain a one-time evaluation conducted before the main CBSE class 10 board exams 2026. This structured yet flexible approach ensures a balanced assessment system while maintaining academic rigor.

Result Declaration and CBSE Class XI Admission Process

CBSE will announce the main exam results in April, followed by the second exam results in June. Students will receive their final passing certificates and merit certificates only after the conclusion of both exam cycles. To streamline the process, CBSE will upload digital results on DigiLocker for easy access.

For CBSE class 10 admissions, schools may grant provisional admission based on the main exam results, with final confirmation subject of the second exam outcome. This ensures a smooth transition for students while maintaining academic continuity under the new biannual examination system.

Post-Result Processes and Benefits of CBSE's New Exam System

Following the declaration of second CBSE class 10 board exam results in June, students may avail post-result facilities including answer sheet photocopies, verification, and re-evaluation. This consolidated approach ensures all academic processes are completed within a single examination cycle. The structural revision aims to:

  • Alleviate stress associated with single-attempt examinations
  • Reduce dependency on coaching culture
  • Promote school-based comprehensive learning
