The expert committee, chaired by the Higher Education Secretary, is currently investigating the difficulty levels of competitive exams like JEE and NEET to ensure they are in sync with NCERT Class 12 curriculum expectations, responding to feedback that recent papers, particularly in Physics—were excessively tough and disadvantaged students without coaching.

The panel will also look into factors promoting coaching dependency, such as the role of "dummy schools," deficiencies in the current schooling system, and the lack of comprehensive career counselling.

Although the Ministry has not set a public deadline for the report, its recommendations are anticipated around the upcoming exam season and are expected to directly influence and potentially modify the difficulty and structure of the JEE Main 2026 and NEET UG 2026 exams to promote fairness.

Panel Formed for Education Reforms

In June, the Ministry of Education established a nine-member committee, chaired by Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi to examine various issues related to coaching. The committee's focus areas include:

  • Exam Difficulty: Analyzing data to determine if the difficulty level of entrance exams matches the Class 12 curriculum.
  • School System Gaps: Examining flaws in the current schooling system, specifically the limited focus on critical thinking, logical reasoning, analytical skills and innovation.
  • Wider Concerns: Assessing the rise of coaching centres evaluating the fairness of entrance examinations.

The panel comprises key stakeholders, including the CBSE Chairperson, joint secretaries, and representatives from institutions like IIT Madras, NIT Trichy, IIT Kanpur and NCERT, as well as principals from KVs and NVs. The final recommendations will ultimately determine if the difficulty levels of JEE and NEET are modified to ease student stress and curb the influence of coaching institutes.
