The competition was never low. Every year it’s rising but decreasing, especially for admission to one of the IITs. Over just five years, the number of JEE Main candidates has jumped by over 5.36 lakh. In contrast, the number of students qualifying for JEE Advanced has remained almost unchanged. Scroll below to get a view of the participation and passing ratios.

Securing a desired B.Tech seat in an IIT has never been tougher, with over 14 lakh students appearing for JEE Main annually. The competition is intensifying, as evidenced by the declining qualification rate for JEE Advanced dropping from 26.64% in 2021 to an anticipated 16.96% in 2025. This means that despite the steady increase in applicants, the number of successful candidates securing a spot in the 2.5 lakh eligibility pool for JEE Advanced has remained stagnant, highlighting the escalating challenge for top spots.

The real battle for one of the 18,000 available IIT seats begins with the All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Advanced. For top-tier branches, a General category AIR below 5,000 is often necessary, demanding exceptional and consistent brilliance across both Advanced papers. Aspirants must, therefore, focus on a robust strategy to surpass the majority of the top 2.5 lakh candidates rather than focusing solely on the initial qualification percentage.

JEE Main Past Year Trends (2021-2025)

The data set from 2021 to 2025 clearly shows a significant and accelerating increase in competition for JEE Main. The appearing numerical for the JEE Main exam has risen considerably. 5-Step Strategy to Beat the JEE Main 2026 Exam

For JEE 2026, the competitive environment demands a new generation smarter preparation, not just longer hours. We recommend to start early and follow this short structured 5-step plan below:

  1. Build Strong NCERT Base: Master all fundamental concepts in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Tricky core questions are very familiar in JEE Main question pattern. Use concise notes for quick formula recall.
  2. Follow a Balanced Study Plan: Divide your daily hours into slots. Dedicate time to each subject to ensure no subject is neglected.
  3. Practice Mock According to Your Study Routine: Attempt full-length mocks every 10-15 days initially, increasing the frequency to once a week closer to the exam. Analyze mistakes meticulously.
  4. Revise Wisely: Integrate short weekly and monthly analysis and reviews even before your syllabus is fully finished. Maintain notebooks to track and revisit frequent errors.
  5. Prioritize Breaks: Avoid being burned out. Consistency is key. But do not forget to prioritize breaks in between to reduce stress.

Competition is rising and success is not guaranteed. But the JEE Main aspirants who are committed to systematic planning, consistent practice and strategic revision will definitely beat the odds and secure their dream IIT seat.
