Dream of studying at top engineering colleges like the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). As the JEE Main 2026 registration period comes closer, the common question arises is, “Can getting an admission to Nits or IITs without taking the JEE Main exam is actually possible?”

For most Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) courses, the JEE Main is a must. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is to conduct this important exam twice a year (in January and April). Admission to the first-year B.Tech programs at NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs occurs through a process called JoSAA counselling. This counselling uses your rank in JEE Main 2026 to offer you seats.

However, there are a few special ways to get into some of these top institutes without a JEE Main score, mainly for specific programs or higher studies. As the JEE Main 2026 registration nears, those aspiring to engineering wonder what are the alternate ways to have a 2026 admission without appearing for JEE Main.

Alternative Ways You Can Enter Top Institutes Without JEE Main 2026

There are distinct alternative routes you can pursue, especially for specialized programs or higher studies given below:

IIIT Hyderabad's Special Entrance Exams

The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT Hyderabad) is a renowned institution that offers its own unique admission paths, making it an exception among IIITs. Instead of relying solely on JEE Main, IIIT Hyderabad conducts its own undergraduate entrance tests. These include the Undergraduate Entrance Exam (UGEE), the Lateral Entry Entrance Exam (LEEE), and the Special Channel of Admission (SPEC).

The UGEE mode is designed specifically for you if you’re interested in their dual-degree programs. In this program, you earn both a B.Tech and a Master of Science (M.S. by Research) simultaneously, giving you deep expertise in both engineering and research.

Admission through any of these channels (UGEE, LEEE, SPEC) is based on your performance in these institute-specific entrance exams, which is then followed by an interview. It's crucial to remember that scores from IIIT Hyderabad's UGEE, LEEE, or SPEC cannot be used for the common JoSAA counselling process; they are only valid for admission to IIIT Hyderabad itself. This is an ideal path if you want a research-focused engineering education right after high school and are willing to take a separate entrance test.

PG Admissions (M.Tech, M.Sc, PhD)

If you plan to pursue higher degrees after completing your Bachelor's degree, you do not need to appear for JEE Main to enter NITs or IIITs. These institutes offer various PG programs. Admission to these is managed through different national-level exams or, at times, through the institute’s own internal tests:

  • GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering): This is the main exam for M.Tech admissions at NITs and IIITs. Achieving a competitive GATE score is essential for your engineering postgraduate studies.
  • JAM: If you are aiming for M.Sc. programs in Science subjects at NITs and some IIITs, you’ll need to take the JAM exam.
  • Institute’s Own Tests: For certain M.Sc. or PhD programs, or for specialized courses, NITs and IIITs may conduct their own entrance exams and interviews.

Therefore, if your goal is to pursue higher education in engineering or science at these premier institutes, you should prepare for GATE, JAM, or relevant institute-specific exams after you complete your undergraduate degree.
