The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a clarification regarding the Class 12 board examination results. This statement addresses feedback from students, parents, and educators concerning lower-than-expected scores in core science and mathematics subjects. Several candidates noted a variance in their performance metrics, pointing out that while they qualified for national competitive examinations like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), their board exam scores did not align with those outcomes.
In a formal statement, the Board firmly defended its evaluation infrastructure and the reliability of its newly implemented digital assessment process. The CBSE clarified that the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system was introduced to improve fairness, transparency, and consistency through standardized, step-wise grading. According to the Board, the digital mechanism successfully eliminates manual calculation discrepancies and ensures that no answer goes unassessed.
School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar backed the system, noting that OSM is a globally recognized method used by international boards and various Indian universities to remove tabulation errors. Out of 98.66 lakh answer sheets scanned into PDFs, only about 13,000 illegible copies required manual evaluation. Additionally, CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh stated that the system was launched only after a successful dry run in January, emphasizing that the core practice of step-wise marking remained identical to previous manual methods.
Why the Drop in CBSE Class 12 Pass Percentage?
The introduction of the digital system coincided with a notable drop in overall performance metrics this year. The 2026 Class 12 pass rate fell to 85.2% from the 88.39% recorded in 2025. Furthermore, the number of high-scoring students achieving above 90% dropped from 1.12 lakh last year to 0.94 lakh in the current session.
Some school administrators blamed this decline on a rushed transition, arguing that teachers were not fully equipped to handle the technology and were forced to grade blurry digital copies. However, other education experts suggested that the lower scores stem from a deliberate shift toward tougher, competency-based questions. Experts also noted that digital evaluation eliminates the "sympathetic grading" occasionally seen in manual checks, while prolonged screen time may have caused evaluator fatigue.
CBSE 2026 Class XII: Massive Fee Reductions
The government has announced a significant reduction in the processing fees required to challenge results. You can now obtain photocopies of your evaluated answer sheets or apply for marks verification for Rs. 100. The cost to have an individual question re-checked is set at Rs. 25.
Revised Schedule for CBSE Class XII Answer Book Scanned Copies and Re-Evaluation
Following a series of sequential notices from CBSE, the deadlines for obtaining scanned copies of Class XII answer books have been extended to accommodate website glitches. The updated timeline and the status of the subsequent verification windows are outlined below.
Scanned Photocopy of Answer Books
Due to website crashes and high traffic, the deadline to apply for a scanned copy was extended three times:
- Original Dates: May 19, 2026 – May 22, 2026
- First Extension: Extended to May 23, 2026
- Second Extension: Extended to May 24, 2026
- Final Closed Date: May 25, 2026 (Midnight)
Verification of Issues Observed & Re-Evaluation
- Original Planned Window: May 26, 2026 – May 29, 2026 (Up to 11:59:59 PM)
- Current Status: Extended. Because of the initial portal delays, CBSE announced that the portal for Verification and Re-evaluation will remain open for at least 2 days (June 1) after the very last student receives their scanned answer sheet. The exact fresh window will be communicated by the board shortly.
