Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC): The Time-Tested Skill

Don't panic over new vocab. VARC is your reading test. You’re aiming for perfect accuracy on high-weightage areas. Scroll down and read to understand it in a better way:

Reading Comprehension (RC)

In CAT 2024 exam, RC passages covered 67% of the VARC section, making up 16 out of 24 questions. What is your strategy to nail in RC?

  • Drill the Analysis: In your last few days, don't just "read." Practice quickly finding the central theme, the author's main point, and the overall tone in passages from unfamiliar topics like science, philosophy, or economics. This skill is non-negotiable.

The VA Trio

Have you observed that there is a consistently high question counts in three areas, making them easy targets:

  • Para Summary: With 3 questions per slot, this is a scoring zone. Master condensing a paragraph into one precise sentence.
  • Para Completion: Another 3 questions Focus on identifying the logical jump or concluding sentence to complete the flow.

The TITA Lifeline (Odd-one-out)

The Type in the Answer (TITA) questions have No negative marking. If you can confidently spot the sentence that breaks the group's logic, you get +3 marks risk-free. Hunt for these!

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR): Set Selection is Key

In CAT 2024, the DILR section went up to 22 questions and threw a curveball with five sets in the same 40 minutes. You cannot solve everything. Your final mission is to quickly identify and solve two or three easy-to-moderate sets perfectly.

  • High-Scoring Set Types: Dedicate time to complex Logical Puzzles, sets based on Games and Tournaments, and Seating/Grid Arrangements. CAT 2024 analysis showed questions on candlestick charts and multi-variable data sets—so be ready for diverse chart types.
  • TITA Maximization: DILR has one of the highest TITA counts (8-10 TITA questions). This is where you get to attempt questions without the penalty of negative marking. Focus your final sectional practice on solving these accurately.

Quantitative Ability (QA): The Golden Triangle of Quant

The QA section had 22 questions in 2024, and the blueprint is clear: the vast majority of questions come from three topics.

  1. Arithmetic (The Foundation): Still the most important area, with 8 questions guaranteed in every slot. You must perfect:
    1. Percentages and Profit & Loss
    2. Time and Work / Speed, Time, Distance
    3. Ratio and Proportion and Mixtures
  2. Algebra (The Reliable Second): With 5 to 7 questions, Algebra is your next focus.
    1. Focus Areas: Equations (Linear & Quadratic), Functions, and Logarithms. Drill your fundamentals here.
  3. Geometry & Mensuration (The Consistent Contributor): Expect 3 to 4 questions. Don't try to learn every theorem, but master the fundamentals:
    1. Triangles and Circles
    2. Basic concepts of Coordinate Geometry.

What You MUST SKIP: Stop Wasting Your Time

In these final days, new learning is the enemy of high accuracy. Instead, follow this plan and customize with your ability and pace.

  • Ditch New Topics: Do not, under any circumstance, start a complex new topic now. Stop trying to master the deep end of Modern Math (P&C, Probability) or complex Number Systems.
  • Why We’re Suggesting to Skip? The data is simple: Number Systems and Modern Math combined made up only a small fraction (5–9% each) of the QA section in CAT 2024. Your time is far better spent perfecting Arithmetic.
  • Reduce Mock Test Frequency: Mock tests are great, but in the final week, reduce them. A bad mock at this stage can shatter your confidence and lead to unnecessary stress. Switch your focus to Analysis and taking quick Sectional Tests

Your Winning Formula: Strategy and Accuracy

The real secret to a top score is selective attempting with high accuracy.

  • The 99th Percentile Insight: In CAT 2024, an overall score of around 90 marks on the 204-mark paper was enough to secure a 99 percentile. This means you only needed to solve about 30 questions correctly out of 68!
  • Prioritize Selection: Your strategy must be flawless question selection. Focus on finding and solving the 10-12 easiest or most familiar questions in each 40-minute section. Don't chase every question.
  • High Accuracy, Low Attempts: With a -1 penalty for incorrect MCQs, attempting fewer questions with an accuracy above 85% is far more rewarding than attempting many with low accuracy.

Trust the data, trust your notes, and trust your gut. A confident, focused attack on the high-yield topics is your surest path to success.
