WBJEE 2025 results have been postponed again indefinitely because of a contempt case filed in the Calcutta High Court. The case accuses the state government of violating a prior court order on OBC reservations, causing a delay in the release of the results, which were originally set for August 7, 2025.

The declaration of the WBJEE 2025 results has been delayed due to a court case in the Calcutta High Court regarding OBC reservations once again.

The court has directed the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) to issue a new merit list within 15 days. This order was issued because the previous list was found to be based on a revised reservation policy that violated a previous court directive.

The Postponement and Court's Order

The WBJEE 2025 result is indefinitely postponed as the Calcutta High Court hears a contempt case against the state government and the WBJEEB. The legal action began when a student complaint by email alleged the current merit list used an updated OBC reservation policy not in effect during the exam. The court ruled this violated its May 21, 2025, order, which had banned the use of the new OBC list for WBJEE admissions.

Official Statements and Court Orders

According to board chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, the results had been prepared and were ready for release on June 5 but were held back due to the ongoing legal dispute over the OBC reservation list. She confirmed that the WBJEEB would now comply with the Calcutta High Court's order. The court's directive is to create a new merit list based on a 7% reservation for 66 OBC classes that were recognized prior to 2010.

Justice Kausik Chanda verbally ordered that the results could not be declared on August 7, and that the state's new OBC policy, introduced on June 10, 2025, cannot be applied retroactively to the WBJEE exam. The Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department was also summoned to court to explain the state's position. The court has also explicitly stated that no further steps in the admission process, including counselling, can be taken until the new merit list is published.

The New Merit List

The Calcutta High Court has ordered the WBJEEB to prepare and publish a fresh merit list within 15 days. This new list must be based on a 7% reservation for the 66 OBC classes that were recognized by the West Bengal Backward Classes Department before 2010. The court explicitly ruled that the new OBC policy, introduced by the state on June 10, 2025, cannot be applied retroactively to the WBJEE exam, which was held on April 27, 2025. The Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department was also summoned to explain the state's position.

Impact on Students

This situation has created significant uncertainty for thousands of engineering aspirants. The WBJEEB has not yet announced a new date for the results, leaving students waiting for further clarity on the revised merit list and the final result declaration. The court has also mandated that all admission procedures, including counselling, must be halted until the issue is resolved.
