JEE Main 2026 Eligibility Criteria (Age, Academic Qualification & State Eligibility)

The JEE Main 2026 eligibility are given here with all criteria details. Check it below:

Age and Passing Year: No age limit is required for appearing in JEE Main 2026. More factors are given here:

Eligibility FactorCriteria
Eligible Passing YearsThose who passed the Class XII/equivalent examination in 2024 / 2025, or them who are appearing in 2026.
Ineligible Passing YearsThose who passed the Class XII/equivalent examination in 2023 / before are not eligible.
Year of PassingThe passing year is considered the year the result was first declared as 'pass' for that examination. Improvement attempts in subsequent years do not change this initial passing year.

List of Qualifying Examinations (Equivalent to Class XII): To be eligible, you must have passed or be appearing in any one of the following final examinations:

  • 10+2 Final Exam: From any recognized Central or State Board (e.g., CBSE, CISCE).
  • Pre-University/Intermediate: Two-year examination conducted by a recognized Board/University.
  • Defence: Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing (NDA).
  • Open Schooling: Senior Secondary School Examination by NIOS (with >=5 subjects) or BOSSE, Sikkim.
  • Vocational/Technical: Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Exam or an AICTE/State Board 3-year Diploma.
  • International: GCE 'A' level, IB Diploma or Cambridge University High School Certificate.
  • General Equivalence: Any examination recognized as equivalent to10+2 by the AIU.

State of Eligibility: JEE Main 2026 State Code of Eligibility determines the state in which the candidate first passed Class XII, rather than their place of residence. This applies even if an improvement exam is taken elsewhere. NIOS candidates use the state of their Study Centre, while Indian nationals from Nepal/Bhutan use the permanent Indian address from their passport. OCI candidates passing Class XII abroad are eligible only for the All India Quota seats, not Home State Quota seats, in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs.

The primary advantage is providing two opportunities to improve their scores on the exam. Additionally, if you miss the first session for any reason you have a second chance in the same academic year without having to wait until the next one. You are not required to appear in both sessions; however, for those who do, the best score of the two attempts will be considered for the final ranking.
