Across all NITs, there are 24,525 total seats, but only 9,389 are available for the Open/General Neutral category, as a 50% Home State Quota reserves the remaining seats. We have analyzed the expected Safe Score 2026 for 3-tier NITs below.

Admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is entirely based on your performance in the JEE Main 2026 exam. The minimum required rank/score varies for every institute and engineering programme. Based on JoSAA ‘s previous counselling data we can call a safe score for general category students is approximately 240+ marks to gain admission to a top NITs in 2026. It corresponds to a %ile above 98.5.

A score of 180+ marks is generally considered sufficient. It's good for securing a seat in the newer or mid-tier NITs or in less competitive branches. Note that higher scores than these are required for admission to highly competitive branches like Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). But before that all candidates must meet the Class 12 academic requirements: General/OBC/EWS students need 75% marks (or the top 20 percentile), and SC/ST students require 65% marks (or the top 20 percentile). The final admissions are determined after the JoSAA counselling based on the cutoff ranks.
