JEE Advanced: Over 1300 Seats Added for UG, PG and PhD Programs at New IITs for 2025-26

The IITs have introduced over 1,300 additional seats for UG, PG and PhD programs starting 2025-26. This expansion across newer IITs significantly improves admission chances for JEE Advanced qualifiers, creating more opportunities to study at India's premier technical institutes. In a significant move to enhance technical education opportunities, the Government of India has announced addition of 1,364 new seats across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programmes at five newer IITs, Jammu, Palakkad, Bhilai, Tirupati, and Dharwa for 2025-26 academic year. This move improves admission chances at IITs for engineering candidates who qualified JEE Advanced exam.

The 2025-26 academic year marks a significant expansion of seats across India's newer IITs, with IIT Bhilai leading the increase by adding 378 seats, followed closely by IIT Dharwad with 343 seats, IIT Tirupati with 199 seats, IIT Jammu with 251 seats, and IIT Palakkad with 193 seats. This strategic allocation is part of the government's broader initiative to enhance capacity in premier technical institutions established post-2014. The expansion not only addresses the rising demand for quality engineering education but also aims to bolster India's research and innovation capabilities by providing students with increased opportunities to access world-class infrastructure and faculty. By focusing on these emerging IITs, the initiative ensures a more equitable distribution of technical education resources across the country while maintaining high academic standards synonymous with IIT brand. Annual Seat Expansion in IITs: Progressive Increase Planned till 2028-29

The Indian Institutes of Technology are set to undergo a major expansion, with five third-generation IITs, Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Palakkad, and Tirupati collectively adding 6,576 new seats across BTech, MTech, and PhD programmes by the 2028-29 academic year. Leading this growth, IIT Bhilai will contribute the highest number of seats 1,485, followed by IIT Jammu with 1,288 seats, IIT Palakkad with 1,264 seats, IIT Dharwad with 1,473 seats, and IIT Tirupati with 1,066 seats. The expansion will be implemented in phases, starting with 1,364 seats added in 2025-26, followed by 1,738 seats in 2026-27, 1,767 seats in 2027-28, and 1,707 seats in 2028-29, ensuring a steady increase in opportunities for engineering and research aspirants nationwide. This expansion strengthens India's engineering education system while addressing growing student demand for top-tier technical programs.

Union Education Budget 2025-26: Key Highlights and Major Announcements

The Union Education Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, announced the addition of 6,500 seats across IITs established after 2014, excluding IIT Goa due to its pending shift to a permanent campus. The expansion focuses on five IITs, Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, and Tirupati with the Union Cabinet approving an investment of INR 11,828.79 crore over four years (2025-26 to 2028-29) to enhance academic and infrastructure capacity. This phased expansion aims to strengthen technical education and research opportunities, catering to the growing demand for quality engineering education in India.
