In 2025, leading IITs allotted 28 seats beyond their sanctioned capacity. With a steady increase in seat intake and women's participation reaching 20%, the government also plans to add 6,500 seats across new IITs in the coming years.

IIT Kanpur has recently shared JEE Advanced 2025 report, which covers this year's exam and admission process. The report includes important details like result statistics, analysis of the question papers, and updates on how seats were filled in different IITs. This information is helpful for students, parents, and teachers to understand the current trends in IIT admissions.
According to Joint Implementation Committee (JIC), a total of 18,188 seats were given to students this year, which is slightly more than the approved 18,160 seats. This shows that the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is working to make sure as many seats as possible are filled. However, IIT BHU Varanasi was the only institute that admitted one student less than its approved number of seats.
IITs Allocating Seats Over Sanctioned Intake
This year, 11 IITs, including top institutes such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur, have allotted more seats than their officially approved intake. This step reflects the ongoing effort to ensure that no seat goes unfilled during admission process. Candidates can refer to the full list of IITs that have admitted students beyond their sanctioned capacity in the section below:

IITs Seat Intake Increased Over the Years
IITs has been growing consistently to meet the rising demand for engineering education. This steady increase aims to offer more opportunities to qualified candidates across the country. Interestingly, the only year with zero vacant seats was 2019, which marked a rare achievement in full seat utilization. Below is a year-wise comparison of seat intake at IITs in recent years:
| Seat Intake Increased at IITs Over the Years | |
| Year | Seat Intake |
| 2023 | 17,385 |
| 2024 | 17,760 |

What Seat Expansion has the Government Planned for IITs?
The Union Budget 2025 announced the addition of 6,500 seats across five newer IITs, Palakkad, Dharwad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati. These seats will be introduced gradually over the next five years, mainly at the BTech level, to expand access to quality engineering education.
Women Participation Improved in IITs Admissions
This year, the proportion of female candidates admitted to IITs has increased slightly. A total of 3,664 women secured seats, making up 20.15% of all admissions. IIT Tirupati (21.57%), IIT Roorkee (20.50%), and IIT Madras (21.09%) reported female representation higher than the overall average. These figures include 3,632 supernumerary seats reserved exclusively for women, along with allocations under categories such as defence personnel dependents, OCI/PIO holders, and foreign nationals.
