Karnataka's medical education has received a significant boost with the addition of 450 new medical seats from the NMC. For the first time the state has also introduced a 15% NRI quota in its government medical colleges. Get details and official statements below.

In a press conference on September 6, 2025, Karnataka's Medical Education Minister, Sharan Prakash Patil, announced that the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted the state 450 additional medical seats for the 2025-26 academic year. This decision fulfills a long-standing request.
For the first time, the state will also introduce a 15% NRI quota in its government medical colleges. The minister noted that these seats will have a fixed fee of INR 25 lakh each, which he believes will help the colleges become more financially independent. The new seats have been evenly distributed, with 50 seats allocated to medical colleges in Belagavi, Bengaluru, Chikkaballapura, Hassan, Kalaburagi, Mysuru, Raichur and Vijayanagara. Additionally, 50 additional seats have been added to the medical college in Hubballi, managed by Mooru Savita Mutt.
Patil called this a "welcome development," highlighting that Karnataka's total medical seat count has now risen to 9,663 from 9,263. After the NMC's chairman, Abhijit Chandrakant Seth, announced the expansion of 8,000 medical seats worldwide, he personally presented a proposal to the NMC in New Delhi.
Expressing his satisfaction, the minister stated, "The number of students aspiring for medical education is rising every year. Many meritorious students are unable to afford the high fees in private colleges. Hence, we appealed for more seats, and I'm glad our request has been approved."
Patil, who also serves as the Skill Development Minister, announced a Skill Summit for November and a job fair in Mysuru after the Dasara festivities. A nursing summit is also scheduled for October.
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) will manage the allotment of 85% of state quota seats, which include approximately 11,000 MBBS and 3,500 BDS seats. The remaining 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats will be handled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
