West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has updated its supplementary examination policy for Class 11, effective from the 2024-25 academic year, offering significant relief to higher secondary students. There was no opportunity for a supplemental exam in the same year for students who failed Semester 2 papers. Now, they will be permitted to sit for supplementary exams within one month of the result declaration, a provision that was not available before.

Significant modifications have been made to Class 11 supplemental exams under the recently updated Regulation 8 of the WBCHSE, which will take effect for the 2024-2025 academic year. Previously, just the students who failed in Semester 1 subjects were eligible for a supplementary exam, which they took concurrently with their Semester 2 papers in the same academic year. With the new rule, students who do not pass any Semester 2 subject will also be granted the opportunity to sit for a supplementary exam, which will be conducted by their respective institutions within one month of the result announcement.

But if a student fails to clear the supplementary exam for either Semester 1 or Semester 2, they will be required to repeat both semesters in the subsequent academic session. It has also been explicitly stated that all supplementary examinations, whether for Semester 1 or Semester 2, will be organized directly by the individual schools. This particular change has been applied retrospectively to benefit students who appeared for the 2025 Semester 2 exams. The Council has clarified that this initiative aims to minimize academic disruption and provide students a fair chance to clear their backlogs without losing an entire academic year. Heads of Institutions (HOIs) have been directed to implement this updated regulation immediately as a special measure.
