Students with 4-Year Undergraduate Degrees Can Now Directly Pursue PhD- Says UGC Chairman

UGC Chairman
Students with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly pursue for National Eligibility Test, NET, and study PhD. The news was announced on Sunday by University Grants Commission, UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar.

To pursue PhD without the Junior Research Fellowship, JRF, students can now appear for the program with 4 years of undergraduate degrees with a minimum of 75% marks or equivalent scores.

At the moment, candidates must apply for NET with a minimum of 55% marks. However, from the upcoming session, candidates can appear for the test with a 4-year UG degree from any discipline, stated the UGC Chairman.

Students must have a minimum score of 75%, and the reserved category students (SC/ST/OBC/PwD and economically weaker) will get 5% relaxation.

The NET exam is conducted twice a year, once in June and another one in December. The score of this test is used for JRF. Also, students can appear for this exam to further their studies in the research level.

Earlier this year, UGC declared that NET marks will be used for PhD admissions from the 2024-25 session to avoid the need to appear for the other entrance exams.

“Using NET, which is held twice a year, universities can provide better flexibilities to the students, allowing them to get valid scores in any session to apply for PhD programs at various colleges, added University Grants Commission”- said UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar.
