Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)
Located in Uttarakhand, this is the oldest engineering college in the country. IIT Roorkee was established in 1847 as a Civil Engineering college by James Thomason, who was the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces in India at that time. After the demise of Thomason, the college was renamed by Proby Cautley, the canal’s chief architect in 1854 as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering. In 1949, the institute became the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. IIT Roorkee has 22 academic departments in the streams of Management, Humanities, Applied Sciences and Engineering. According to NIRF ranking the college has the 6th rank in the engineering category.
