JEE Advanced 2024 Eligibility Criteria Released- 75% Mandatory for IIT Admissions

On May 13, 2024, Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE declared the 2024 class 12 board results. According to the official data 24,000 students received 95% marks, and 1.16 lakh students scored above 90%. Furthermore, 1.22 lakh students received a compartment. The overall passing percentage was 87.98% for female students than boys.

Students who aspire to study in the engineering field and take admission in the IITs, other than getting the cut-off marks in JEE Advanced test, they must have a minimum 75% marks in class 12 degree for admission to IITs. For SC/ST/ PwD category students the minimum percentage should be 65%. The same requirement is for admission to CFTIs, IIITs, and NITs.

75% Compulsory for IIT Admissions through JEE Advanced 2024

To qualify for the admission to IITs in India, IIT Madras has declared the JEE Advanced 2024 guidelines on the official website, based on that candidates must meet the below conditions.

Criterion 1

Candidates must have passed JEE Main paper 1. Students must also be among the top 2,50,000 score holders. The reservation percentage are-

GEN-EWS – 10%

OBC-NCL – 27%

PwD – 5%

SC – 15%

ST – 7.5%

OPEN – 40.5%.

Moreover, students must have at least 75% marks in class 12 degree for the admission to IITs. For SC/ST/ PwD category the minimum percentage should be 65%.

Criterion 2

Candidates must have cleared the class 12 or equivalent degree from a recognized board with mandatory five subjects and must score within the top 20% of successful students based on the categories.

The calculation of the percentage will comprise the compulsory subjects in the single academic session. Therefore, students can aim for a higher mark of 75% or better in one or more subjects for greater scores. They can also focus on being within the 20% top student’s list by advancing the scores in all subjects.

The main subjects considered for calculating the aggregate scores and the cut-off marks for meeting the requirement of ranking within the 20% top students are, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, a language subject which can be more than one, here the highest score in one of the language topics will be considered, and any other subject other than these 4 subjects.

Additionally, students must understand the attempt limit of JEE Advanced 2024. They can only attempt two times in two years. For instance, if a student has appeared in JEE Advanced in 2023, they can again appear in JEE Advanced 2024. However, candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2022, cannot sit for this year’s test.

JEE Advanced 2024 Eligibility Criteria for Earlier Admissions at IITs

Students who were admitted to an IIT through JoSAA 2023 counselling cannot appear for JEE Advanced 2024, regardless of whether they stayed with the program or didn’t continue. Also, candidates who accepted seats previously in IIT by personally reporting at the reporting venue, cannot appear for this test. Along with these eligibility criteria, students whose IIT admission was cancelled after they joined will not be allowed to appear for JEE Advanced 2024.

However, students who got admission in the 2023 preparatory course in the IITs for the first time, can appear for JEE Advanced 2024. Also, the candidates who paid the JoSAA 2023 seat acceptance fee are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced 2024 only if they meet the below conditions-

  • If their seats have been cancelled for any reason before the last selection round of seat allotment.
  • If they withdrew before the final round of seat allotment
  • If the students did not report at the reporting venue.

What to Do If the Score is Less than 75% in Class 12

Candidates who have scores below 75% in the class 12 exam, can always improve their marks. They can apply for a re-evaluation or apply for improvement tests if their board offer such opportunities. For the students. Whose boards do not offer these facilities, can enroll in National Institute of Open Schooling, NIOS or take a gap year to take the exam again in the next year.

JEE Advanced 2024 will be conducted on May 26, 2024 and the registered students can download the admit card on May 17, on the official website, jeeadv.ac.in. The application process ended on May 7, 2024.
