IIT Bombay, Delhi Listed Under Top 150 in QS World University Ranking 2025

IIT Bombay remains the top varsity in the ranking of QS World University. In the previous year, IIT Bombay had the top spot in the list, in the latest news on early morning Wednesday, the QS World University Ranking declared 61% increase in the favor of Indian universities, including IIT Bombay at the top position. According to the worldwide ranking, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has the top position in the world for the thirteenth time in 2024.

In 2025, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has captured the position from 149 to 118, the a change of 31 ranks.

Top QS World University Ranked Indian institutes

Similar to last year, IIT Bombay, followed by IIT Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru received the second and third positions in the country. IISc climbed from 225 to 211, the change was of 14 ranks, and IIT Delhi rank increased from 197 to 150 in 2025, climbing 47 ranks.

One of the biggest increases in ranks has been seen by the University of Delhi, the institution jumped 79 positions from 2024 which was 407 to 328 in 2025.

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Anna University have captured the 8th, 9th and 10th positions.

The director, IIT Guwahati, Prof Devendra Jalihal has expressed his pleasure over the performance of the college. He stated, the year after year improvement in the global ranking of IIT Guwahati is a proof of the tireless hard work and dedication of the students, staff and their faculty. Their commitment to quality, in innovation, research, and education continues to influence them to move forward. He further added, that they are proud of these achievements and will stay focused on improving their global standards by contributing to the advancement of technology and knowledge.

Institutes like Savitribai Phule Pune University, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, are also in the top 15 list. However, IIT Indore rank has been decreased from 454 to 477 in 2025.

Symbiosis International (Deemed University) has achieved its rank in top 20 list of QS Ranking. Other colleges such as University of Mumbai, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, Chandigarh University, and IIT-Hyderabad also received placement in top 20.

What is the Performance of India in QS Ranking

A total 61 colleges in the country have increased their position, and 24% have stayed in the same rank. Apart from this, 9% have received decline in position, and 3 new universities entered the ranking list.

In case of the improvement, the University of Delhi has made the significant leap from last year, it has climbed 79 ranks to achieve the 328th spot. In this ranking edition, India has stayed the seventh most represented country, with a third position in India, after Japan and China.

The areas India has made some significant marks is in the international collaboration and research. The country has surpassed global average rank of 23.5, capturing the second highest ranking in Asia in the field of higher education, with over 10 ranked institutes, only after China.

However, India also faces issues in Internationalization. According to the QS World University reports, India needs more International Student and faculty ratio indicators. The number of international students is below the average level, 26.5. Similarly, the international faculty rate is 9.3. The student/faculty ration score in India is 16.2 which is lower that the global average ratio of 28.1.

University of Cambridge, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), United States has achieved decline in rank, from the last year’s position. Stanford University also dropped down from 5th to 6th in 2025.

ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore (NUS), and UCL have maintained their 7th, 8th and 9th ranks in 2025. Moreover, ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology has been announced as the top institute for 17 years.

To compile the QS World University Rankings of 2025, the organizational claimed that they have analyzed 176 million citations, 17 million research papers, insights from 105,476 employers and 175,798 academics and received data from 5,600 global institutions.
