Kolkata: JK Board of School Education (BOSE) has faced criticism after the class 10th Social Science exam, held on February 17, 2025, had a multiple-choice question with no correct answer. The question asked, "Who was the first president of the Indian National Congress (INC)?" The options provided were A.O. Hume, Mahatma Gandhi, S.N. Banerjee, and Lala Lajpat Rai.
However, subject experts confirmed that the correct answer is Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee , who served as the INC's first president in 1885. While A.O. Hume founded INC, Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee held the first presidency.
A political science professor explained to Greater Kashmir, No doubt the Indian National Congress was founded by A O Hume, but the first president was Womesh Chandra Banerjee.
This incident follows recent criticism of the JKBOSE for a copy-paste error in a Class 10 textbook. In the "Disaster Management and Road Safety Education" textbook, the phrase "state of body" was incorrectly changed to "UT of body" (Union Territory of body). This previous mistake has further fueled public disapproval of the board. Some schools were also struggling with a book shortage and a leadership vacuum due to the chairman's position remaining vacant. This incident has ignited anger among students, parents, and educators, with many calling for immediate accountability.
Students expressed confusion and stated that exam centre staffs were unable to help in such situations. "We do not understand why JKBOSE fails to maintain the sanctity and integrity of the exams," a statement from Mehvish, a student from Srinagar.
A student's parent from Anantnag questioned, "Will JKBOSE take responsibility and award grace marks, or will they again ignore this issue? 'Bashir Ahmad, a Srinagar resident, expressed his concern, stating, 'What is wrong with JKBOSE? Why are they playing with our children's future? Are they deliberately trying to ruin the futures of Kashmiri children? We demand answers from JKBOSE and urge Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to intervene.'
A JKBOSE official clarified, "All students will receive full marks for the flawed question, regardless of their chosen answer." The official added, "the question setter will be removed from the panel of examiners and will not be compensated for their work. The JKBOSE has an internal committee which deals with such matters."
Earlier, there were also some inconveniences reported before the exam even started. A class 10 student at Government Girls HSS Khanyar, Srinagar, missed her annual exam due to a registration error. The student, Toyiba Yaqoob, was denied entry to the exam hall because her roll number slip was incorrect. The school claims the error, where her registration form was submitted under the name of a former student, Toyiba Fayaz.
Toyiba and her family said that they visited the BOSE office multiple times before the exam, but officials failed to correct the mistake. The school principal acknowledged the initial "human error" but insisted JKBOSE could have rectified it. She said that she and the teacher visited the BOSE office for six days, urging them to prioritize the student's future over penalizing the teacher.
A BOSE official, Joint Secretary Suraj Singh Rathore, stated the school's request came too late and the error could no longer be fixed. The principal noted that the student may be able to take the exam later as a private candidate.
